How Can We Fool Time?

Only 5 million people around the world will celebrate their birthday today, as opposed to over 20 million on any other day. That might sound strange, but not if you remember that today is February 29th, otherwise known as “Leap Day”.  For those born on this day, it is not just another “regular” birthday. This year they get to celebrate on their actual birth date, as February 29th occurs only once every four years.

If you know a person celebrating today, or you are one of those lucky few yourself, you are probably familiar with the joke or notion that they only age 25% as fast as other people (40-year-olds celebrating their 10th birthday, for example), but this is of course not the case. Regardless of our birth date, we all age at the same pace.

Having said that, there are things one can do to slow the aging process and live a healthier and longer life (and no, we are not referring to  Botox injections).

Aging is a natural process that happens to everybody, but it’s also affected by our habits, lifestyle and environmental factors – which can either expediate or delay it. As time goes by, our cells grow old, stop dividing and eventually die, but by adopting healthier habits you can help protect the cells and elongate their lifecycle.

Research has found different ways in which aging can be slowed down, largely by focusing on how one can reduce the shortening of the Telomeres. The Telomeres are located at the end of our chromosomes, the strands of DNA, and act as protective caps which reduce damage to the DNA. Telomeres shorten (and sometimes grow longer) both naturally and as a result of different lifestyles habits.

40 minutes of daily workout, adequate sleep, maintaining a healthy and balanced diet and stress relieving activities are all known ways to slow Telomeres shortening and in turn, our aging process.

Another way to help us feel young is to keep a sharp mind. Studies show that even the most common brain stimuli can help alleviate mental decline, so crosswords, trivia quizzes, puzzles or even regular conversations with friends and family  can help maintain long-term mental capacity, and it’s never too early to start.

But adopting new habits is not enough, one should also refrain from negative habits, such as smoking. Smoking is known to cause multiple health problems, but it can also make our skin look older. It’s considered as one of the main causes for wrinkles, after our actual aging and sun exposure. So, as you quit smoking, not only will your overall health improve and the risks of health problems reduce overtime, but your complexion will gradually improve too. Blood circulation will improve and more oxygen and nutrients will flow to your skin, which will result in a healthier, younger look.

These habits cannot stop time from turning, of course, and they won’t make us any younger, but they can help us look younger, live longer and enjoy life to the fullest.
