Make Every Drop Count - Six Amazing Facts About Blood

Very often a fear of needles stops people from donating blood but it is best to remember that the benefits of donating blood are huge. Taking only 45 to 60 minutes to complete, one unit (350 ml) of blood can save up to three lives and is also very good for the donor's health.

The world relies on the public to voluntarily donate blood to save the lives of so many in need. An estimated 108 million blood donations are collected annually. However in many countries the demand for good blood exceeds the availability of it. Currently there are only 62 countries that are close to their required national blood supply. If only 3% of the population of each country donated blood, transfusion shortages could be avoided.

There are added benefits to your health when donating blood. It is believed that it reduces stress through the act of being altruistic therefore making you feel good about yourself, burns 650 calories, can potentially reduce the risk of developing cancer, helps improve cardiovascular health and replenishes the body with fresh new blood cells.

Here are six incredible facts that will blow your mind:

  1. The heart will pump the equivalent of 95.4 Olympic swimming pools worth of blood in an average lifetime.

  2. When you look up at a clear sky and see strange spots drifting around, those are white blood cells commonly referred to as floaters.

  3. The combined length of blood vessels in the adult human body can wrap around the world 2.5 times.

  4. A single red blood cell can travel a full circle through the human body in 30 seconds.

  5. The human heart pumps at such a high pressure that it can shoot blood up to 9 meters in distance.

  6. In an emergency, coconut water can be used as a blood plasma substitute as it contains high sodium and low potassium levels.
