Medix Review Reveals Overlooked Cancer

When Mrs Cole returned to Kenya, she was assured that she was cancer-free. Medix caught the mistake in time and set her on the fast track to recovery

Mrs. Cole first became acquainted with Medix a number of years ago. Living in Kenya, it is often hard to find quality medical care, and therefore Medix was of great help while she underwent assessment and treatment of a number of orthopedic issues.

Unfortunately, since her previous treatment period, Mrs Cole was diagnosed with advanced Squamous Cell Carcinoma, a kind of skin cancer located on her scalp. Mrs Cole opted to return to the UK for treatment, where her Oncologist recommended extensive surgery. The operation included excision of the lesion and most of her scalp, to which skin grafts were later applied.

During post-surgery follow up, a full body scan was conducted, which revealed another mass on her right lung. The imaging showed that the lesion was locally contained and therefore another excision surgery was performed. Now with two procedures under her belt, Mrs Cole was assured she may return to Kenya for routine radiotherapy treatment and monitoring.

At this point Mrs Cole contacted Medix again for help in finding an adequate centre to carry out the prescribed treatment in Nairobi. Not wanting to leave any stone unturned, Medix conducted a review of all the imaging and medical reports pertaining to her latest condition. While taking a second look at the imaging, Medix Specialist Radiologist identified malignant cells located in the lymph nodes near the right lung. This finding was overlooked by the treating team in England and therefore was not properly addressed.

Although the additional malignancy was not widespread, existence of cancerous cells outside the primary tumor changes the staging of disease. Staging is one of the most significant factors for Oncologists when deciding on the best treatment options, therefore the new cells warranted reassessment of the situation.

Recognizing the importance of the new finding, Mrs Cole’s Case Manager wasted no time, immediately sending the medical information, pathology and imaging for review by a Specialist Oncologist. The specialist believed that due to the fact that malignant cells had spread, a more systemic approach was needed, specifically in the form of chemotherapy.

Medix explained these new developments and treatment recommendations to Mrs Cole, as well as identifying and coordinating implementation of the actual treatment. Mrs Cole later related that her case manager “provided her with a sense of security. He was attentive, well versed in my medical information enabling him to give invaluable input”.

Throughout the rounds of chemotherapy Mrs Cole’s medical team stayed in the picture, monitoring her progress and supporting with any difficulties. “Medix support took a huge weight of my shoulders during treatment, says Mrs Cole.

Two weeks after conclusion of treatment Mrs Cole had a repeat PET CT which revealed that all the malignant cells had disappeared.

Now in complete remission, Mrs Cole requires only periodical examinations to make sure that disease does not recur. And what is more, Mrs Cole reports that she “feels extremely well and is thoroughly enjoying her life".
