Medix Put Ms. Anderson Back On Her Feet

No one could understand why an athletic young woman was suddenly barely able to walk until Medix came into the picture. The correct diagnosis and the best treatment allowed Ms. Anderson to once again climb to the top

Ms. Anderson (39) used to run, go rock climbing and play volleyball vigorously. She did all that with great pleasure until, in early 2010, she suddenly started suffering from a persistent pain at the top of her right foot.

Even after Ms. Anderson unwillingly decreased her outdoor activities and tried alternative footwear, the pain didn’t go away.

Ms. Anderson’s life had drastically changed. The once extremely athletic young woman living in Jersey found herself turning from one doctor to another. Throughout 2011 and 2012, Ms. Anderson underwent a number of diagnostic tests and even some injections intended to ease the pain, still with minimal, transient relief.

At this point Ms. Anderson’s ability to partake in athletic activities was severely hampered and even carrying out rudimentary daily tasks, such as walking her dog, involved serious pain and discomfort.

Seeking a second opinion Ms. Anderson turned to another generalist orthopedic consultant in Jersey, who concluded that exploratory surgery was the next rational step in order to try and pinpoint the origin of the pain. Unfortunately, nothing was discovered during the surgery. Moreover, the pain had worsened following the procedure and walking had become more difficult.

The doctor that performed the surgery was a generalist and  was not able to properly complete the surgery. His feedback was unsatisfactory stating that he could not remove the bone as it didn’t exist", says Ms. Anderson, "feeling deflated after waiting so long to have it sorted I called Medix".

Medix appointed Ms. Anderson a personal medical team, which included a leading physician and a coordinating nurse. They spoke at length with Ms. Anderson, taking her medical history and collecting all the medical information relevant to her condition in an orderly fashion. Once the clinical picture was completed, the case, including all previous imaging, was sent for review by a Medix orthopedic specialist.

"It was clear Medix were there to help me and ensure I received the best treatment possible but also to make sure I understood it as well"

Pending the specialist review, Medix nurse stayed in constant contact with Ms. Anderson, monitoring her condition and addressing any concerns in a clear fashion, free of unnecessary medical jargon. Ms. Anderson would later say that “It was clear they were there to help me and ensure I received the best treatment possible but also to make sure I understood it as well".

While carefully reviewing the imaging, the Medix orthopedic specialist identified a stress fracture in Ms. Anderson’s foot that had been previously overlooked and would explain the prolonged pain.

In order to corroborate this finding and ensure that this was indeed the correct diagnosis, Medix referred Ms. Anderson to Dr. Cullen, a leading foot specialist in London for a physical examination and an additional perspective. Prior to Ms. Anderson’s appointment, her medical case manager corresponded with the specialist, explaining the history and complexities of the case. When Ms. Anderson arrived for her appointment, Dr. Cullen was fully prepared, sparing Ms. Anderson the hassle of once again recounting her history.

Sure enough, the foot specialist concluded that the diagnosis of a stress fracture was correct and recommended surgery for removal of the fractured bone. These recommendations were relayed and explained to Ms. Anderson, which as a result of the close contact with her Medix team and their clear explanations, felt confident that this was the best course of treatment.

Shortly thereafter, Ms. Anderson underwent the surgery under the hand of Dr. Cullen and the fractured bone was removed in its entirety. Finally, after months of pain and numerous consultations Ms. Anderson was pain free: "I'm feeling great", she said recently, “the pain I used to feel before the procedure is now gone and I have been able to return to rock climbing again.
