Robotic Surgery Sounds Impressive, But Robotic or Not, Surgery Is Not To Be Rushed

Surgeons often are quick to offer procedures and after three surgeries, Mr G. had enough. Thanks to Medix, he was able to recover and stay off the operating table.

Mr G. has a history of knee troubles that started from a sports accident he sustained at a young age leading to three different surgeries over the years including an ACL ligament reconstruction. Ever since his knee troubles began, he has suffered from pain, stiffness, limited motion and swelling. Despite his discomfort, tried to  maintain an active lifestyle including swimming and cycling.

An MRI was performed and Mr G. consulted with a local knee specialist. Upon reviewing the imaging, the consultant recommended that he undergo a fourth surgery: a robotic partial knee replacement.

Mr G. turned to Medix in order to get Personal Medical Case Management and expert advice on potential treatment alternatives. Given the previous surgeries he had undergone, Mr G. was weary of any invasive treatment which could possibly leave him worse off than he was to begin with.

The Medix Case Management team gathered all the medical information regarding his condition and sent it for review to a world leading knee specialist. Looking at the imaging, the Medix specialist explained that Mr G. was suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee. Before resorting to surgery, he recommended less invasive options to be considered. Specifically knee injections that lubricate the knee joint and ease pain combined with a knee brace and physiotherapy.

The Medix Personal Medical Case Manager explained the options to Mr G.  and he was happy to follow this recommendation and avoid a fourth surgery. The results were excellent. Within a short period of time Mr G.  felt a relief in pain and was able to return to long stretches of walking without any symptoms. Keen to leverage the success, he returned to swimming and return to his regular level of activity. Mr G. was thrilled with the service he received from Medix, allowing him to avoid another painful and unnecessary procedure.
